Admission Information for International Students

Eligibility issues

1. If one of the followings fits your situation, you are NOT eligible to apply as a foreign student:
(1) You are of ROC nationality.  According to Article 2 of the Law of Nationality, a person who belongs to one of the following categories isconsidered to be of ROC nationality:

i.   A person whose father or mother was, at the time of the person's birth, acitizen of ROC.

ii.   A person born after the death of his (her) father or mother who was, atthe time of the parent's death, a citizen of ROC.

iii. A person born in the territory of ROC and whose parents are bothunknown or are stateless.

iv. A naturalized person.

(2)   You were of ROC nationality, but it has been less than eight years since the date on which your ROC nationality was revoked by approval of the Ministry of Interior.  The lapse time is counted up till the date when classes begin for the semester you are seeking admission.

(3) You are of overseas Chinese status, or have applied for admission as an overseas Chinese at any universities/ colleges in Taiwan , the ROC.

(4) You hold a Hong Kong or Macau or People's Republic of China nationality.

(5) You have obtained a high school degree as a foreign student in ROC. However, this restriction does not apply to foreign students who graduate from a school for foreign residents located in the ROC, or from a bilingual division (program) affiliated with a senior high school in ROC.

(6) You have been expelled by a university or college in ROC.

2.   Foreign students with a high school diploma are eligible to apply for undergraduate studies at NCHU, those with a bachelor's degree may apply to a master's program; those with a Master's degree may apply to a PhD program.

Application Deadlines
Applications for the Fall 2006 semester are accepted through March 31, 2006 .

Application Process
A complete application package shall include the following:
1.A check list

2.A completed application form with photo attached.

3.A photocopy of diploma from the highest educational institution completed (translated into Chinese or English). The diploma shall be certified according to the guidelines of the Ministry of Education governing authentication of overseas academic degrees.

4.Official transcript of academic records (translated into Chinese or English) with grade point average (preferably on a 0-4 scale) from each institution attended (high school for those seeking undergraduate admission, university/college for those applying to MS or PhD programs).

5.Two letters of recommendation.

6.A health certificate (including HIV virus blood serum immunity test report) issued by a public hospital within past six months.

7.A study plan, written in Chinese or English.

8.Autobiography within 300-500 words, written in Chinese or English.

9.Proof of financial sufficiency.

10.Additional relevant materials as may be required by the program you are applying to.

For documents listed in items 3 and 4 above, the copy of the documents and their Chinese or English translation must be certified by ROC's embassies, consulates or representative offices abroad.  Alternatively, the exact copy or translation may be notarized by a local notary public authorized by ROC's embassies, consulates or representative offices.  In this later case, a copy of the certificate granting this authorization shall accompany the documents. Arrange the above documents in the order according to the check list .  Do not put documents in a binder or folder.

Incoming Students

2006/2007 Program for Academic Exchange (PAX)

PAX (Program for Academic Exchange) is a program designed to promote international cooperation and exchange among the partner universities of NCHU. This is also a special program for international students who would like to experience different culture and lifestyle in Taiwan . Under this program, you will take Chinese Language Courses, Introducing Taiwan Courses, and Elective Courses offered by Colleges of Liberal Arts, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Engineering, Veterinary Medicine, and Social Sciences and Management in English. Appropriate credits will be issued if the courses are completed successfully. We hope that every participant from all over the world can get together in NCHU and discover Taiwan together. During this one-year program, we also look forward the interaction between people from different cultures can bring out more inspiration and creation. Each student will be guided by one advising professor for consulting any problems during the stay in Taiwan . The financial supports include tuition, dormitory, living expense (about US$200 per month), and round-trip flight ticket for selected excellent students. We cordially invite undergraduate students to join PAX.

Regular Exchange Program - Application Information

NCHU has about 60 sister universities worldwide. For students who are now studying at the sister universities of NCHU, they can apply for the non-degree exchange program according to the Agreements between two institutes. Applicants must submit the following documents through their university's international office (before May 1 for first semester or before October 10 for second semester):
(1) A completed application form with photo attached. (2) Certificate of Enrollment issued by the student's home institution. (3) Official transcript of academic records (translated into Chinese or English) issued by the student's home institution. (4) Two Letters of recommendation (5) A health certificate (including HIV blood test report) issued by a public hospital within the past six months. (6) A study plan, written in Chinese or English. (7) Autobiography of 300-500 words, written in Chinese or English. (8) Additional relevant materials as may be required by the program you are applying to.

Regular Exchange Program - Exchange Student Scholarship

Exchange Student Scholarship is available for both outgoing and incoming exchange students. Students who would like to apply for exchange student scholarship must prepare the required documents.

The criteria to review the eligibility of the applicant are as follows.

(b) language proficiency 40%
(c) study plan 20%

Exchange Student Scholarship

Exchange Student Scholarship is available for both outgoing and incoming exchange students. Students who would like to apply for exchange student scholarship must prepare the following documents. (Incoming exchange student only needs the first five items)

(a) English transcript
(b) Two letters of recommendation
(c) English autobiography and study plan
(d) useful documents for scholarship review, e.g. language proficiency

certificate, TOFEL transcript, etc.
(e) letter of consent from the Department
(f) letter of consent from parents or the guardian
(g) record of authorization from the curriculum committee of Department for the

courses taken in the host institutions

The criteria to review the eligibility of the applicant are as follows.

(a) academic performance 40%
(b) language proficiency 40%
