General Information
Established in 1947, the
Department of Applied Economics at National Chung-Hsing University
traces its roots to the academic field of Agricultural Economics, and
has steadily broadened and diversified its fields of teaching,
research, and outreach. The Department aims to train social scientists
and professionals in applied economics and related specializations,
and has graduated more than 2000 students. Its alumni have been
employed in various public and private sector occupations, such as
agriculture, business, finance, and education. The high achievements
of its graduates have been recognized by public and private
organizations around the country.
Teaching
Goals
The Department’s most important
mission is undergraduate and graduate education of students. It
provides students with the education and knowledge needed to make
sound economic decisions about agricultural activities, use of natural
resources, and industrial structures. Courses covering various fields
impart ample knowledge of economic theory and its application to
contemporary problems, and develop the ability to employ quantitative
techniques and other methodologies in conducting social and economic
studies.
Research Areas and Highlights
Research and teaching focus on:
(1) agricultural economics,
(2) natural resource and environmental economics,
(3) industrial economics.
Research Space and
Library
The Department territory is
divided into two buildings: Building (1) is for undergraduate use and
now has 13 research rooms. Building (2), for M.S. and Ph.D. classes,
is divided into Sub-buildings A, B, and C. Sub-building A is two
stories high and contains two classrooms, the biggest of which can
accommodate 100 students, and 17 other rooms plus one each for the
library and computer. Sub-Building B contains research rooms and a
meeting room for professors. Sub-Building C is used only for research
purposes and has ideal teaching facilities and a good environment for
research and study.
Department library holds more than 4000 foreign books, 3000 Chinese
books, at least 70 foreign and Chinese journals, as well as hundreds
of statistical magazines, and thousands of research reports. Every
book, magazine, journal, article, and report is catalogued for easy
access by readers and the library manager. Newspapers are also
provided in the reading room.
In order to upgrade its teaching and research efficiency, the
Department has concentrated mostly on tools for teaching and research
purposes in recent years. Generally, it has two kinds of facilities:
those for common use, including overhead and slide projectors,
photocopiers, fax machines, video recorders, cameras, etc., and those
stored in the computer room and teachers’ research room, including
multi-media computers, PCs, laser printers, color scanners, etc. At
present, the computers in most of the teachers’ research rooms are
advanced devices that greatly benefit teaching and research
activities.
Research Projects
and Future Plans
Many diversified research
projects, mainly funded by the Council of Agriculture and National
Science Council of the Executive Yuan, have been successfully
accomplished. Faculty members are working on solutions to some of
today’s most complex agricultural, environmental, and business
problems. Research projects include economic issues related to natural
resources, environmental issues, technology, water management, land
management, agribusiness, trade, risk management, information, and
biotechnology. In response to the rapidly changing social environment,
the Department continually makes efforts to find solutions to the
challenges confronting society, and looks forward to becoming involved
in more research areas of public concern and to improving its research
facilities.
