Background

Fungi of the genus Rhizoctonia are among the most important worldwide soil-borne plant pathogens. They cause serious diseases in most cereals, horticultural crops and forests. In order to promote the international exchange of ideas and collaboration in research on these fungi, the International Society of Plant Pathology (ISPP) Rhizoctonia Committee and the Taiwan National Organizing Committee cordially invite all interested parties to participate in the 3rd International Symposium on Rhizoctonia (ISR 2000). The symposium will be held at the National Chung Hsing University, Taichung, Taiwan, Republic of China in the year 2000.

Location

Taiwan is in the subtropics. The daytime temperature in summer is about 30°C. The city of Taichung is located in central Taiwan. Taichung has a population of one million people and is the cultural and economic center of the central Taiwan region. The meeting place, National Chung Hsing University, is situated in the center of Taichung. The available tourist attractions include parts of the city center with Buddhist and Taoist Temples, the Confucius Shrine, Cultural Center, Museums of Fine Arts and Natural Science History. Taichung is also the agricultural research center of the island. Important agricultural research institutions are located in this area. The countryside outside of Taichung has outstanding scenery, and includes areas such as Sun Moon Lake and recreational resorts on beautiful mountains.

How to reach Taichung

CKS Airport is the closest international airport, two hours by car. There are frequent direct buses connecting the airport and Taichung.

6. Taxonomy, identification and detection

7. Biological control and disease suppression

8. Integrated pest management for control of Rhizoctonia

9. Chemical control

10. Induced resistance

11. Epidemiology and disease dynamics (including modeling)

12. Other related subjects e.g. innovative techniques in the study of Rhizoctonia

Call For Papers

The symposium will include invited oral presentations, oral presentations and poster presentations. Authors are asked to indicate their preference for an oral or poster presentation but the organizers will choose the final style of the presentation. Authors of oral and poster presentations are invited to submit abstracts of not more than 250 words before 30 April 2000. Abstracts can be forwarded to the local organizer via email or post.

In all cases the fee will cover the costs for 3 lunches, 2 dinners, a banquet and coffee breaks. Full and student registrations will also receive an abstract book.

8. Financial Assistance: Local organizing committee offers financial assistance for delegates. Applications please send a curriculum vitae, abstract and publication list to the symposium secretariat.

Accommodations

Participants can elect to take accommodation in following categories:

1. Guesthouses of agricultural research institutes: Two-bed room 35 US$, three-bed room 50 US$ per night. All rooms    
    have baths.

2. Hotel (business): Single room from 50 US$ per night.

3. Hotel (5 stars): Single room from 110 US$ per night.

In all cases breakfast is not included in the accommodation costs. We will reserve hotel accommodations for participants to stay in Taipei.

Social programs for participants and accompanying persons will be offered.

Accompanying Person Program

We shall organize a program for accompanying persons to visit during the symposium the cultural center, museums and a market for shopping.

Post Symposium Tours

The following sightseeing tours will be organized. Minimum numbers are fifteen persons.

1.  20 August: Half-day historic tour of Taichung. Cost: US$ 10 per person.

2.  20 August: Half-day agriculture and horticulture tour. Cost: US$ 20 per person.

3.  21 August: Full day tour of Sun Moon Lake and agriculture. Cost: US$ 40 per person. This fee includes a lunch and entry tickets.

4.  22 August: Full day tour of The National Palace Museum and Handicraft Center, Taipei. Cost: US$ 50 per person. This fee includes a lunch, a dinner and entry tickets.
