Biotechnology Center

To meet the advances of current biotechnology, Biotechnology Center (BTC) was reorganized from Agricultural Biotechnology Laboratories (ABL) in 2001.  The first mission of BTC focuses on the integration of biotechnology-related courses in National Chung-Hsing University (NCHU) and the assistance to build up core teaching laboratories.  Currently, BTC is in charge of 12 teaching labs and has organized four study programs in different colleges, including Plant Biotechnology, Animal Biotechnology, Chinese Herb Medicine Biotechnology, and Environmental Biotechnology.  The second mission is to integrate interdepartmental coopreations and to gain more research resources from university, government, and private sectors, for supporting major biotechnological researches.  For example, BTC has been responsible for the cooperative projects between Taichung Veterans General Hospital and NCHU since 2002.  The third mission is the establishment of core facilities to provide services and to upgrade the capabilities for the needs of biotechnological research.  Currently,  several core labs provide excellent services of DNA sequencing, hybridoma culture, microarray biochips, bioinformatics, and NMR, X-ray, and mass spectrometry analyses of biomolecules.  The access to these core facilities also is extended to the research community in central Taiwan.

In addition, BTC also offers a convenient channel for those who need technological training and information in molecular biotechnology.  For each year BTC holds training courses for radiation safety and biotechnical workshops for the introduction of newly developed techniques and information.  BTC is a cradle of NCHU for bridging fundamental researches and practical applications of biotechnology, and a hub in central Taiwan for the development of domestic biotechnological industry.
